Do you remember that strange Pepsi commercial where Kendall Jenner gives a can of Pepsi to a police officer during what looked to be a human rights protest?
Yes? Me too. I remember it being a disaster. People were threatening to boycott Pepsi. Pepsi was standing by its commercial. Kendall apologized but to this day, YouTube pulls up “Kendall Jenner Pepsi Commercial” when you type her name into the search box. And, it’s been over 3 years.
This is obviously a full on trainwreck. But, what I remember being the constant sentiment is: “This is what happens when there are no black people at the decision-making table.” This always stuck with me.
It’s Awkward But You Have To Say Something
Well, you don’t have to do anything. But, I feel compelled. A literal body ache happens. These days I have a small seat at a big table. When I’m included in decision making, it usually feels like a team effort. I don’t have a say in everything that comes out, but I’m fortunate that my opinion is welcomed when I’m present. So of course, there have definitely been times where I needed to use my voice in what I considered an awkward moment.
Mostly, awkward because I wasn’t sure if it was my place to tell the c-suite that “this may not be the best direction”. In life, in general, I find myself – very often – unsure if people actually want advice. But, that’s a different story.
In spite of this, I often find myself to be “the person” that black twitter is saying should be at “the table”. So, I muster up the courage to say something. And, it’s ALWAYS well received. It makes me wonder why I was scared in the first place.

You’re Not Going To Get Fired
When I ask myself what makes me nervous, certain thoughts come to mind:
- Maybe I’m not the right person to deliver this message. The Truth: If not me, then who?
- I don’t want to offend anyone. The Truth: I’m doing it for the good of the company.
- I want to be seen as a team player. The Truth: Being a “yes man” is not a goal of mine.
And then, there’s the thought that all of this will pile up and they’ll fire me for some falsified random reason as a cover-up for not smiling and nodding. But, that’s yet to be proven on my end.
The Truth About Diversity In The Marketing Department
A benefit of diversity is perspective. We all have a different view based off of our experiences. When we can see the work from every angle, it benefits us all. Not only is representation in the boardroom important. That representative should feel empowered and be welcomed to speak up.
But, you know this already. Because I’m not talking to companies. I’m talking to the girl who has worked hard to earn her seat and still finds herself surprised that her opinion is valued. Because this all feels like it can be taken away at any moment.
If no one has said this to you, allow me to give you permission to support your company using your unique perspective. With the world beginning to accept that racism is alive and see the importance of representation – if you’re the one minority – whether that be due to your sexual orientation or the skin you live in, I want to encourage you.
Be afraid, but do it anyway. You will be valued even more for it. And, yes sis, it’ll take some practice. It is in fact awkward. But, if you’re the one with the knowledge then share your jewels. ❤️
