Is there a strategy to choosing music for your social posts?

Have you noticed this Instagram trend? I’m seeing a lot of people add feel-good music over posts and stories. And, not just videos. Boomerangs, pictures and plain text graphics are getting the same treatment. You guessed it, It’s spiking engagement. The algorithm is eating this up!

For a good throwback tune, I’ve sat for the full 15 seconds of a still image. I’m specifically seeing this work with the “oldies but goodies” genre of music. The music that brings me back to my childhood – making up dances in elementary school or jonesin’ to a love song in high school. In fact the older the better. I’ve sat and stared at a cat pic when an Earth, Wind, & Fire song came on. Why? It inspired memories of the silver and black stereo system that my mom would play her greatest hits CD’s from when I was a kid. And yes, that meant it was time to deep clean.

Making your customers revisit good memories helps them to associate those comfortable feelings with your brand. You created an emotional connection. The next time they hear the song, you’re now added to that memory Rolodex.

Plus, the instant benefit is that your engagement on the post increases and the algorithm rewards you by putting your post in front of more people.

How To Make The Music Work For You

Consider your audience. What genre and era of music were popular during their formative years. As a millennial, I live for 90’s r&b, 2000’s hip hop, and soul music. This may not resonate with Gen X, who may love rock, soul & 80’s hip hop. You get the point.

A quick google search can help you to find the perfect vibe for your ideal customer. Good luck & have some fun!
